Project Cam:  Cable Technology Erases Geographic Distance

Imagine kids exploring all over the world . . . a ninth-grade government class discusses the local election process with their city's mayor . . . science classes in Ohio become explorers in the Panamanian rainforest . . . teens in Pennsylvania share original poetry as part of a poetry slam.

Thanks to cable technology, lessons no longer have to sit on a page. They can leap around the rainforest canopy and come straight from the mouth of a famous explorer.

It’s all possible, and happening now, with Project Cam. Developed by Cable in the Classroom, Project Cam provides an online environment with video, chat, and file sharing capabilities. It allows educators, students, and experts to make live connections to other learners and experts using webcams and high-speed Internet.

Project Cam erases distance, making the educational journey broader. For example, first-year middle school Spanish students in Maine "met" with high school students thousands of miles away in Puerto Rico. Students had a great time sharing their respective cultures and practicing each other's languages. It was an authentic learning experience that, until recently, could take place only if students physically traveled to each other's countries.

You, too, can participate in Project Cam. You can start your own project, or you can join an existing project right here. Available free of charge, features of Project Cam include:
  • Free use for educational purposes
  • Login to a unique, private page
  • Sharing of live video and audio feeds between two participating locations
  • Communicating using live, text-based chat capability
  • Storage and sharing of many kinds of files
