Cyber-parenting: Be Web aware
USA Today “Net worries parents, but they let kids surf" As printed in USA Today, September 26, 2007:
"Most parents and guardians of children 6 to 18 (85%) have talked to their kids about Internet safety. And most think the Internet is generally positive, teaching them skills, giving them information and getting them connected. But they also think it has caused some problems, such as exposing their kids to too much advertising, taking them away from homework or the outdoors and exposing them to sexual and violent content. That's according to a survey out Tuesday conducted by Harris Interactive for Cable in the Classroom and Common Sense Media. The poll also shows that moms and dads have different standards for what is appropriate online behavior. Dads are much more likely than moms to think it is OK for their kids to have searchable profiles, blogs and webpages. And if kids want permission to play online games with others, they are better off asking their father than mother. Some 64% of dads say it is OK to do it vs. only 46% of moms. The poll is based on a telephone survey conducted Aug. 16-17 with of 2,030 U.S. Adults ages 18 and over- of whom 411 were parents or guardians.”
