Cable in the Classroom at the National Educational Computing Conference
View Photos from NECC 2008The educational resources and research available from Cable in the Classroom (CIC) – including the 2008 version of eLECTIONS, the online learning game that helps students learn about U.S. presidential elections – will be featured during a number of events at the National Educational Computing Conference (NECC) in San Antonio from June 28-July 2, 2008.
Cable in the Classroom’s activities at NECC include (all times Central Daylight Time): Saturday, June 28 8:30 am – 12:00 pm Cable in the Classroom Teacher Summit, hosted by Time Warner Cable San Antonio, Time Warner Cable San Antonio office, 1900 Blue Crest Lane off Jones Maltsberger.
The seminar will feature presentations about lesson plans, parental controls, media smart tips, broadband tools, Digital TV transition, media literacy, Internet demonstrations, interactive technology, educational resources and teacher oriented websites. Attendees will also have an opportunity to visit the C-SPAN Campaign 2008 Bus. More than 100 area teachers, teacher aides, principals and school technology specialists are scheduled to attend.

Grand Hyatt Crockett A/B. CIC’s Frank Gallagher and Rhonda Yates and Missouri Teacher of the Year Eric Langhorst (also a
Cable’s Leaders in Learning Award winner) will demonstrate CIC’s eLECTIONS, the free, online learning game about the presidential election that combines interactivity, streaming video and rich content into a memorable, engaging classroom activity.
12:30 pm–1:30 pm Got STEM? Building Interest in STEM among Girls and Minorities,
HGCC 211. Based on the content of the Summer 2008 edition of Cable in the Classroom’s Threshold, Helen Soulé of Soulé Consulting Services will moderate a panel discussion on innovative approaches to build interest and demand in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields among young women and minorities. Panelists include: Erin Reilly from the Project New Media Literacies, MIT Comparative Media Studies; Karen Peterson, from the National Girls Collaborative Project and the Puget Sound Center for Teaching, Learning and Technology; and Daniel Gohl from TIES-Teaching Institute for Excellence in STEM.
Douglas Levin, from CIC, and Marina Leight, from the Center for Digital Education, will offer insights.

ISTE 100 Corporate Members, including
Cable in the Classroom, will share some no-cost resources and upcoming grant opportunities that will assist educators as they integrate technology into the classroom.
Wednesday, July 2 8:30 am – 9:30 am Virtual Tour of a 21st Century Educator Resource,
Grand Hyatt One Star Ballroom E. CIC’s Douglas Levin will join other Partnership for 21st Century Skills board members and staff to demonstrate Route 21, a free online resource, community, and one-stop-shop for 21st-century skills information and resources.
12:00 pm – 2:00 pm High Speed Learning: Broadband Games from Cable in the Classroom,
HGCC Tower View Lobby – Table 10. Several
CIC staff will be on-hand for a hands-on demonstration of free online learning resources from Cable in the Classroom, including those focused on Shakespeare, the presidential election, and the science of weather during this poster session. Each of these broadband learning games combines interactivity, streaming video, and rich content into memorable, engaging, and educational activities.
