Media Literacy: Five Ways to Help Kids be Really Smart About the Media

Welcome to Media Literacy 101, an online primer for parents and teachers on the key concepts of media literacy. We take you through five key concepts of media literacy, explaining each one and providing suggestions for ways to talk with and teach kids how to:
  • Become active and critical thinkers about media
  • Develop criteria for making decisions about media use
  • Find and identify quality media resources
  • Talk about what media they are consuming and why
  • Become better able to use media for learning and communicating.
You’ll find links to videos, articles and Web sites that further illustrate the components of media literacy and critical thinking about media. And if you're interested in exploring this important topic in more detail, suggestions are provided at the end and in the Learn More section.
