Digital Citizenship: Safety & Security

Safety & Security - Knowing the risksWith an Internet connection, a child can communicate with friends, buy music, play games, or share photos and videos -- all by tapping a few keys.  It gives children wonderful opportunities to learn and be creative.  But with the limitless potential of broadband also come some risks—from a child’s own behaviors, to malware to, to dangerous people or information.

Just like in any neighborhood, there are trustworthy businesses and helpful neighbors.  There are also people who are dishonest or dangerous.

In many ways, children are more at risk in their homes and neighborhoods than they are online, but there are threats we need to be aware of and take precautions against. These include dangerous:

  • Individuals like the predators and con artists we hear so much about, but data shows that a greater proportion of the perils come from peers;
  • Information that can spread falsehoods or encourage risky behaviors and beliefs;
  • Software such as the viruses, malware, keyloggers, and more that steal personal information or harm computers; and
  • Actions like sexting, bullying, or posting inappropriate photos that cause harm to others, yourself or your reputation.
