Cable in the Classroom (CIC) represents cable system operators serving more than 90 percent of the nation’s cable television households and more than 200 cable programming networks.  In 2007, the National Cable & Telecommunications Association (NCTA) estimated that Cable in the Classroom reached more than 80,000 schools nationwide. 

As of June 2010, cable industry sources reported that there were more than 61 million households subscribing to basic video services via cable, and more than 44 million were digital video customers.  These homes were served by more than 1,100 cable operating companies.  As of March 2010, more than 40 million U.S. households subscribed to multichannel video services offered by “non-incumbent cable” providers, such as direct-to-home satellite services, telephone companies, and other alternative providers.

The Federal Communications Commission reported in 2006 that there were 565 nationally-delivered cable networks, and that number will have increased significantly since that time with the introduction of many new networks as well as new video formats such as high definition and 3D.

The cable industry is the nation’s largest broadband provider of high-speed Internet access, serving more than 43 million residential and business customers, after investing more than $160 billion to build a two-way interactive network with fiber optic technology. Cable companies also provide state-of-the-art digital telephone service to more than 23 million American consumers.

CIC-member cable systems make significant contributions back to the communities they serve.  Cable system operators and cable networks contribute to local communities value of more than $2 billion annually in community service initiatives.   And in 2008, NCTA estimated that cable system operators provided $3 billion in franchise fees to cities and towns.
